[RG24-6] Development Studies by Youth

This research group aims to promote research and communication of the youth members of JASID. Although not a few youths in Japan are researching on development, they have difficulty in getting opportunities to interact with each other because they are scattered widely all over Japan.

Therefore, they can barely share their ideas and information about development with each other. Furthermore, the topics and methods for development studies are becoming diversified. This trend also highlights the importance of establishing a research group with youths’ initiative to share the diversified ideas.

The main activity of this research group is to hold a thematic session in the Conference of JASID. Members of this study group discuss lively through the process of preparing and conducting a session, which enables them to share each other’s thoughts and experience of development meanwhile to support each other in going further into their own topic. In addition to holding thematic sessions, this research group holds monthly on-line workshops in order to involve more youth members in the activities of the group.

We believe that holding thematic sessions is beneficial not only for the members of this research group but for other JASID members. Fresh perspectives presented by youth will also be a great inspiration to others of JASID.

Please refer to the URL below for further details of our research group.

[RG21-2] Development Approach to Human Security of Children

‘Human security’ is a concept to address safety and security of individual human beings, complementing the traditional concept of state security. It is also a concept to recapture security from the perspectives of protecting people from threats and hazard against their lives, livelihood and dignity, and of empowering people to become more resilient to such threats and hazard, adapting to such social environment.

The objectives of this research group “Development Approach to Human Security of Children” is to explore the concept of ‘human security of children’ collectively, to share empirical cases studied by participating researchers, and to construct a theoretical framework that may facilitate policy recommendations. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a principle of “leave no one behind,” share common issues with the concept of human security.

Thus, in our efforts to achieve the SDGs, development studies and human security studies are closely linked. In exploring how a development approach can be applied to the concept of “human security of children,” this research group will try to position ‘children’ in development studies.

In the fields of international development and human security, research focusing on children has not yet been mainstreamed. Therefore, this research group is expected to play a significant role in promoting an inter-disciplinary approach to “human security of children” in development studies, involving members from diverse academic disciplines. The research group will organize quarterly regular academic meetings.

Based on the research outcomes of the meetings, it plans to organize sessions at spring conferences as well as at annual conferences of the Japan Society for International Development (JASID). Based on the presentations conducted at the regular meetings and JASID conferences, participating members will write academic papers for publication. Some of the papers may be compiled as a book on “human security of children,” which will help disseminate research findings to a broader audience.

4. Message from the Chair of Conference Organaising Committee

The venue of the 24th Spring Conference, Akita City Cultural Creation Centre, was built in 1967 as the Akita Prefectural Art Museum. This building has a unique roof with a round-shape window that helps to shed sunlight to its inside.

Such design of the building was necessary for a museum located in Akita where the amount of sunlight is significantly less in winter. Since 2019, the same building is repurposed to host various cultural activities. We received 40 oral presentations, 5 round table sessions, 3 planned sessions, and 18 poster presentation applications.

In total 66 projects are going to be presented. I am very much looking forward to hearing discussions on various topics during the conference in our special venue, Akita City Cultural Creation Centre.

Activity Report of the Research Group: ”Innovation and Development for Solving Social Problems”

Research Group: ”Innovation and Development for Solving Social Problems”

The research group (RG) on Innovation and Development for Solving Social Problems (IDSSP) was launched early 2022 with the objective of tackling common issues observed in the world and sharing solutions and lessons learned in the process of innovative approaches that can be applicable elsewhere.

We had several events in 2022.

We organized a roundtable session for the 23rd JASID Spring Conference and invited two professors, one from Taiwan and another from Thailand, to share their experiences. Dr. Vincent Y. Chen at the Department of Leisure Management, Minghsin University of Science and Technology & Institute of Fisheries Science, National Taiwan University from Taiwan explained the application of AI for environmental protection in tourism development and Dr. Ariya Svetamra at the Department of Women’s Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, Chiang Mai University demonstrated the use of FPAR(Feminist Participatory Action Research) to cope with the issue of violence toward female migrant workers. This session was consisted of two parts, lectures, and discussions. In the latter part, participants expressed their opinions for these lectures and shared their own experiences. Both speakers and participants are from outside Japan and attended the session virtually. The session was facilitated by the Chairperson of this RG, Dr. Naoko Shinkai at the Department of Policy Studies, Tsuda University and the Vice-Chair, Dr. Pei-Hsin Hsu at Taiwan Forestry Research Institute.

After this, we had a small seminar with Dr. Chen to follow up some details on his project in July.

We also hosted a webinar, a research seminar on Business Innovation During the Crises: no trade-off between human rights and business performance in September, 2022. This seminar was co-organized with the Research Institute for Policy Studies, Tsuda University (TU-RIPS). We invited two guest speakers from Sri Lanka, Dr. Rukmal Weerasinghe, Professor, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, and the Chairperson of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and Dr. Shirantha Heenkenda, Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. The Chairperson of this RG and the Director of TU-RIPS, Dr. Naoko Shinkai, made opening remarks and served as a facilitator

The details can be found from the websites below:

The report of this seminar:

In 2023, we plan to have seminars and a session about innovation and development at the JASID conference. Since most of the RG’s members reside overseas, we will continue our activities virtually.

We appreciate your support and look forward to your participation.

Activity Report of the Research Group: ”Innovation and Development for Solving Social Problems”

Activity Report in the FY 2022

(Oct. 2021-Sept. 2022)

IDSSP (Innovation and Development for Solving Social Problems) was launched in January 2022 after its establishment was approved in the 32nd Annual Conference of JASID in Nov. 2021. This research group was created to provide a platform for researchers in the field of international development to exchange ideas and share knowledge on the process of solving social issues, which are commonly observed in the World, and conduct inter-disciplinary research on applicable innovations. Since half of our members reside outside of Japan, all activities have been conducted online.

In Jan., 2022, a kick-off meeting was held and members were introduced. We also planned our activities for the financial year 2021-2022.

Between Feb. and April, 2022, we prepared for a round table session in the 23rd Spring Conference of JASID. We chose guest speakers and topics, and communicated with guest speakers to organize our session.

In June 2022, a roundtable session, titled “Prospects in Innovation and Development for Solving Social Problems: Learning from Cases in Asia“, was held during the 23rd Spring Conference of JASID. In this roundtable session, we discussed commonality and differences of social issues in Asia and the use of multifaceted approaches in problem-solving. We invited two guest speakers, Dr. Vincent Y-W Chen at the Department of Leisure Management, Minghsin University of Science and Technology and Technology & Institute of Fisheries Science, National Taiwan University, Taiwan, and Dr. Ariya Svetamra, Department of Women’s Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, Chiang Mai University, Thailand.

Dr. Chen presented on “The Application of AI Technology to Address SDG issues” and demonstrated the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to protect green sea turtles in Xiao Liuqiu island, Taiwan, and how to develop sustainable tourism and communities for nature conservation.

Dr. Svetamra presented on “Gendered Dynamics of Women Migrant Workers in Northern Thailand”, described the severe conditions, which migrant women in Northern Thailand had to face in their lives, and explained the application of FPAR (Feminist Participatory Action Research) to create their opportunities in the future. In the discussion session following two talks, participants shared the issues and knowledge in tourism development and international migration.

The vice representative, Dr. Pei-Hsin Hsu, and the representative, Dr. Naoko Shinkai, co-chaired this roundtable session.

In July 2022, we had a research meeting with Dr. Chen to follow up on the issue of innovation and development from AI prospects.

In September 2022, a joint seminar, 2022 IDSSP-JASID research seminar/The 5th TU-RIPS seminar on “Business Innovation During the Crises: no trade-off between human rights and business performance “was held.

This seminar was co-organized by IDSSP and the Research Institute for Policy Studies, Tsuda University. In this seminar, two professors from Sri Lanka, Dr. Rukmal Weerasinghe, Professor, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce and the Chairperson, Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka, and Dr. Shirantha Heenkenda, Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka made presentations.

Dr. Weerasinghe provided a talk on the innovative business operations in Sri Lanka in a state of multiple crises, economic and financial crises, and pandemic, and illustrated how the right of employees was preserved.

Following the talk by Dr. Weerashinghe, Dr. Heenkenda made a speech and added the legal background of human rights in business in Sri Lanka and called attention to possible human rights risks during the crises. In the discussion session after two talks, we reviewed essential factors in leading and developing business in difficult times without sacrificing human rights.

In addition, we had a preparatory meeting with guest speakers and core members before each event and two supplemental research meetings with core members.

If you have a fever (37.5 degrees or higher) or feel unwell, experiencing symptoms, please refrain from coming to the venue, regardless of whether you are positive or negative for an infectious disease.

★Smoking is completely prohibited inside Utsunomiya University.
Please refrain from smoking to prevent passive smoking. Also, to prevent chemical sensitivity, please refrain from using artificial fragrances.

[For in-person presenters]

If you are unable to attend due to illness or any other circumstances that require you to be absent, please promptly notify the conference secretariat and the commentator/chair.

However, please note that if you are unable to attend for any reason, you will be absent. It is not possible to switch to online presentation. Additionally, video recorded presentations will not be accepted as it will not be possible to ask questions on the spot.

Measures to support JASID members with children who plan to attend the spring and annual meetings

The Japan Society for International Development (JASID) wishes to promote vigorous research activities by members with diverse backgrounds and needs.

Based on this principle, we accept members to enter session rooms with children to make presentations or to participate in discussion, on condition that due efforts are made not to interfere with the progress of the session significantly.

In order to create an enabling environment for members raising children, at each of the spring or annual meetings, we will try our best to provide a room at the venue that can be used as a kids’ space – a rest area for the people with children to eat, breastfeed, change diapers, nap, and so on.

JASID and the respective host organizations will not be held responsible for any accidents that may occur in the kids’ space.

For detailed arrangements, please refer to the website of the specific conference of interest.

A subsidy system (up to 5,000 yen per JASID member per conference) is available for those who use private childcare services to attend the principle, members who wish to receive subsidies must apply in advance.

Interested members are required to report their will by marking the relevant checkbox in the online conference registration form.
