Please find below detailed information regarding each of these presentation types. The language of presentation should be either Japanese or English.

★Proposal submission period:
16 February (Fri) – 25 March 2024 (Mon)

(1) Oral presentation

A JASID member can propose and deliver an oral presentation, either individually or as part of a group. It is preferable for co-researchers, regardless of whether they are presenting, to be members of the Society.
Each presentation is allocated a duration of 20 minutes.

(2) Poster presentation

A JASID member can share research findings in a poster format, either individually or as part of a group. The presenter can interact with the audience in a more informal style compared to a formal oral presentation.

The poster will be displayed at a location and time designated by the conference organizer.

(3) Special session and round table

A JASID member can propose and organize a “special session” consisting of multiple presentations focused on a specific theme. It is required to propose one chairperson and two commentators for the session. Non-JASID members are allowed to present, provided they can offer significant contributions to the session. The duration of the session is two hours.

When submitting a proposal, the convenor is requested to submit an abstract for the session as well as abstracts for each individual presentation.

A JASID member can propose and organize a “roundtable” which is characterized by active discussion among presenters and attendees on a specific topic. Non-JASID members are welcome to present, provided they contribute valuable insights to the roundtable discussion. The duration for this session is also set for two hours. When submitting a proposal, the convenor is requested to submit an abstract of the proposed roundtable.

Q: I am a member of JASID. However, I was told “You are not a member of JASID” when I submitted a paper or applied for the conference

Answer

[RG19-1] Migration and Development

The research group aims to analyze the impacts of migration on the economic and human development in their home countries and destinations. Migration, both within and beyond national borders, is a broad concept that encompasses refugees or internally displaced persons of conflicts and natural disasters as well as those who move to seek opportunities of employment, education, or marriage at their own will.

The impacts of migration have been discussed mostly in terms of economic development, particularly its contribution to poverty alleviation through the migrants’ foreign remittance to their home countries. However, the on-going discussion is not sufficient to analyze both the negative and the positive aspects of the migration.

Its negative impacts may include the so-called brain drain, the excessive dependency of households and national economies on the foreign remittance, the disintegration of families, and the underdevelopment of local industries in their home countries. In the present era of global migration, it is no longer realistic or feasible to “develop a community to prevent its members from migration.”

This research group instead starts with accepting migration as an inevitable reality and attempts to seek the potential of migration that contribute to the development of people and societies both in their home countries and destinations.

[BO-3] KEIJI Branch

Director: Matsuo WATANABE (Ritsumeikan University)

In Kyoto-Shiga region, universities specialized in international cooperation and development issues are highly concentrated. The researchers and practitioners form clusters of their own, but this is not necessarily reflected in the development and expansion of JASID’s activities.

The Keiji Branch is intended to provide opportunities for information sharing, discussion, research study for a wide range of people interested in development and international cooperation in the region by promoting cooperation and collaboration between the universities here — such as Doshisha University, Kyoto University, Ritsumeikan University and Ryukoku University — and individuals and organizations in neighboring prefectures such as Osaka.

In addition, the Branch expects to further promote the JASID’s activities, enhance its presence, and increase its membership through activities on the own development issues in this region.

In Kansai region, the Kansai Branch has been organizing activities with primary contribution by the Graduate School of International Cooperation Studies of Kobe University. However, the distance between Kobe and Kyoto/Shiga has certainly made frequent exchanges difficult.

As such the Keiji Branch is also expected to contribute to revitalize the JASID’s activities throughout the Kinki region in cooperation with the Kansai Branch through activities of the Committees of Human Development and Social Affairs, for example.
