The following is a notice regarding the exemption of membership fees for the victims of the Noto Peninsula Earthquake that occurred on January 1, 2024.

Based on the self-reports of those members who reside, work, or study in the affected areas to which the Disaster Relief Law has been applied, the membership fee for the fiscal year 2024 will be waived. If they have already paid the membership fee for FY2024, the fee will be transferred to FY2025.

If you are a victim of the disaster and wish to be exempted from paying membership fees, please contact the head office. Even if you are not sure whether you are eligible to apply or not, please do not hesitate to contact us.

It is with great sadness and grief that we inform you of the passing of Dr. Yumiko Tanaka,JICA Senior Gender Advisor and Visiting Professor at Josai International University on September 26, 2023. Yumiko Tanaka has long been a valuable JASID member and active representative of the Gender and Development Research Group.

Yumiko Tanaka served as Director of the Social Development Department, International Cooperation Specialist (Gender and Development), and Senior Gender Advisor at JICA. She was a Representative of the Government of Japan for the UN Commission on the Status of 　Women since 2018. She also taught at numerous universities for many years.

She was a pioneer and leading expert in gender and development leaving significant marksin the field of international development. She was also passionate about training younger scholars and gender experts.

We celebrate all that Dr. Tanaka accomplished in her lifetime and want to express our gratitude for all her contributions.

For Student Members

Each year in August/September, we conduct a confirmation of eligibility as a student member for the upcoming year.

Student members who fall under any of the following categories must submit proof (such as a copy of their student ID card) that they are still a student on or after October 1 during the following application period by following the procedures below.

• Student members whose student ID uploaded on Member My Page is valid until the end of September 2023
• Student members whose student ID documents (including student ID cards) uploaded to Member My Page do not show an expiration date

JASID has introduced a leave of absence system starting in FY 2023.

This system allows full members and student members to take a leave of absence for up to four consecutive years.

During the period of suspension, member services will be suspended, the sending of the journal and ML will cease, and applications and presentations at the conference will not be possible.

The recent Russian invasion of Ukraine is a both a humanitarian crisis and a violation of the UN Charter, which mandates “respect for sovereignty,” “preservation of territory,” and “prohibition of the use of force.” The lives of the elderly, children, women, men, and many others are threatened not just in Ukraine but also in Russia. The new fiscal year has started on October 1. We would like to inform you about the billing of membership fees for the fiscal year 2022 (October 1, 2021 to September 30, 2022).
Please check the following carefully as there will be some important changes to the timing and methods of payment.

■Billing of membership fees from FY 2022

– JASID’s fiscal year and the public’s fiscal year are half a year apart. As a result, some members did not pay their fees until April of the following year even though they received the bill of membership fee in October. Therefore, from this fiscal year, JASID Secretariat will charge the annual membership fee in every April as a general rule.

– With the above change, JASID Secretariat plans to charge the 2022 membership fee around April 10, 2022. We will announce the date upon our decision.
However, if you need to pay the membership fee by March for any special reason, please contact the JASID Secretariat.

■Methods for Membership fee payment

– As a general rule, the membership fee payment method is the online payment at ‘Invoice/Payment Info’ page after log-in your ‘My Page’ (). You can choose to make payments via credit card or bank transfer, with no transaction charge. Credit card payment has been set as the default when updating to the new system. If bank transfer is more convenient for you, please change it from ‘Change Next Payment Method’ page under ‘My Information’ When your institution pays the membership fee, please select credit card payment by the end of March 2022. When you download the invoice, the account information is written on the invoice.

■Membership fee for 70 years old and over

The JASID Board decided the membership fee for members over 70 years old will be halved from this fiscal year. To apply this, we need your birthday. Although we have already sent emails and letters to the eligible members, please let us know your birthday.

Here is the greetings message from new president.

The new coronavirus spreads all over the world and is reaching to developing countries. Facing this catastrophic crisis, countries are now attempting to isolate themselves from others and to concentrate on countermeasures to protect their nationals.

As United Nations Secretary-General António Gutierres said on March 31, it is obvious that the infection of COVID-19 in developing countries has just started growing, and that the damage in health and economy in the regions will be more devastating than what we are seeing right now.

Indeed, the vulnerable suffer the most from the infection itself as well as repercussions of this outbreak no matter where they live.

The spread of COVID-19 is a global challenge which would not end without serious countermeasures against infection in developing countries.

Unless globe-scale cooperation is undertaken, the world would face risks of recurrent outbreaks anytime anywhere.

Hereby I, Tatsufumi Yamagata, President of the Japan Society for International Development (JASID), urge the global community, civil society, business circles and Governments including that of Japan, to expedite and strengthen their cooperation to block further spread of COVID-19 in developing countries.

JASID will also commit itself to the mitigation of misery of the virus-infected people around the world and the societies damaged from the infection through active research, practice and public outreach.
