Participation in Conferences during the Recess

Answer

During recesses, the member does not have the right to use the services as a member.

For this reason, it is not possible to submit an application for a conference presentation or to participate in the conference as a presenter (nor to take part in organised sessions or round tables).

However, it is possible to attend the conference as an auditor. In this case, please note that the participation fee is not the member price, but the general price applies.

Q: I am a full member but I become a graduate student.

Answer

If you are a working adult enrolled in a graduate school, your membership status is Full Member, not Student Member.

Full members who do not hold a full-time position are able to apply for reduced annual membership fee programme.

Reference: Notice of Application for Dues Reduction for FY 2024 [D/L: 17th Sep.]

If you do not have a job and are enrolled in a university, you can change your membership status to Student Member from the next year by following the procedures below.

However, student members are subject to various restrictions on academic activities that are not required of regular members (e.g., conference presentations, paper submissions, etc.).

For this reason, we recommend that you continue to be a full member as long as possible.

Application Procedure

  • The screening will be held once a year in September (the results will be notified in October).
  • The application submission period will be announced in August on our mailing list and in our newsletter.
  • Please apply through the designated application form URL that will be included in the mailing list
  • After review by the Executive Board, the membership will be changed to student membership from the following year.

Criteria to decide

Membership categories are determined by affiliation as of October 1 of each year.

ex. 1)Enrollment in April 2023

  1. Complete the application process by August 2023 (submit a copy of your student ID card/proof of enrollment)
  2. Review by the Executive Board of Directors
  3. Switch to student membership in FY2024 (from October 2023)
  4. Annual membership fee invoices issued in April 2024 will change to student membership rates.

ex. 2)Enrollment in October 2023

  1. Complete the application process by the end of August 2023 (submit letter of admission in lieu of proof of enrollment)
  2. Review by the Executive Board of Directors
  3. Switch to student membership in FY2024 (from October 2023)
  4. Submit a copy of your student ID or proof of enrollment by October 2023
  5. Annual membership fee invoices issued in April 2024 will change to student membership rates

Note

In the case of a change of membership status from full member to student member, if the application is not submitted by the deadline, the change of membership status to student member for the following year will NOT be accepted.

If you are unable to arrange for the documents to confirm your student registration in time by the deadline, please contact the JASID secretariat office before the deadline.

Q: Designate an overseas destination for postal items

Answer

If you would like mail from JASID to be sent abroad, please go to your “My Page” and change your address.

You will need to devise a method of stating this.

A) Sent to my overseas affiliation address

Do NOT enter the information of your institution address, even if you are mailing to your institution.
Please provide the following information in English in the Home> Address > Address field.
-Name
-Name of your institution
-Address (including country and zip code)
*In some countries/regions, this may be a P.O. Box instead of an address.
ex.)Ms. JASID Hanako, JASID Secretariat Office, P.O. Box XXXX, XX Central Post Office, XX City, PHILIPPINES

B) Sent to my home address abroad.

ex.)Ms. JASID Hanako, XXth Floor, XXXX Tower, RCBC Plaza 0000 XXXX Avenue, XX City, PHILIPPINES

Notes on international shipping

JASID also dispatches our journal through a contractor to members who live overseas.

However, due to international circumstances such as new coronavirus infections or the Russian invasion of Ukraine, or postal conditions in the recipient country, there may be cases where the postal item (the conference journal) sent out may not reach you.

For this reason, the JASID Secretariat Office will not be able to respond to any enquiries regarding undelivered journals sent overseas. Please be aware of this in advance.

Members living abroad who wish to stop receiving our journals should contact the JASID Secretariat Office.

Q: I haven’t received my postal parcel.

A: The journal is sent by “Kuroneko Mail” from the Journal Publication Centre. All other mail is sent via the post office. The following are some of the most common causes of non-delivery of postal items.

Address description was incomplete.

Please register the full address notation, including the room number, on your “My Page” for the mailing address. A great deal of mail is returned because there is no room number in the address.

The surname on the nameplate and the name of the person to whom it is addressed are different.

If the surname given as researcher and the surname on the postal address are different, it is often assumed that the researcher has moved to a new address.

In this case, please add the surname as it appears on the address to the end of the address registered on your “My Page”.

Alternatively, the surname can be added to the family name by notifying the JASID Secretariat Office.

The relocation notice was submitted to the post office but not to JASID

The conference journal is sent by Kuroneko Mail.
For this reason, the journal will not be forwarded to your new address even if you notify the post office of your change of address.
Please complete the following notification form.

Change Your Address

See also below for information on the procedures to be taken when moving house.

Every time we send out mail including the journals, a large volume of mail is returned to the JASID Secretariat Office. The JASID Secretariat Office spends an inordinate amount of time checking new addresses and re-directing mail. We would be grateful for your cooperation in ensuring the smooth running of JASID.

Q: Paying multi-year membership fees

If you have two years of unpaid membership fees, you will need to complete the payment process for each invoice when you make your membership fee payment on your My Page.

In “the Invoice / Payment Info” several invoices are listed, starting with the newest invoice.

For this reason, just settling the first invoice does not mean that the full amount has been paid, so please ensure that there are no unpaid invoices remaining after settlement.

Q: How to set up a new research group

Answer

Applications for the next year’s branches and research groups are usually accepted around the end of April/May.

Members will be informed of the application procedure via the membership mailing list and newsletters.

The application period is only once a year.

The application is considered by the Planning and Management Committee, which is made up of all the permanent directors, and is discussed and approved or rejected by the Board of Directors. The JASID will make grants to approved branches and research groups.

As a condition of receiving a grant, it is obligatory to submit accounting books and activity reports at the end of the financial year.

Newly approved branches and research groups will be launched after the budget proposal has been approved at the General Assembly of Members.

Research Groups that continue from the previous financial year may be active from 1 October, when the new financial year begins.

Activity Report of the Research Group: ”Innovation and Development for Solving Social Problems”

Research Group: ”Innovation and Development for Solving Social Problems”

The research group (RG) on Innovation and Development for Solving Social Problems (IDSSP) was launched early 2022 with the objective of tackling common issues observed in the world and sharing solutions and lessons learned in the process of innovative approaches that can be applicable elsewhere.

We had several events in 2022.

We organized a roundtable session for the 23rd JASID Spring Conference and invited two professors, one from Taiwan and another from Thailand, to share their experiences. Dr. Vincent Y. Chen at the Department of Leisure Management, Minghsin University of Science and Technology & Institute of Fisheries Science, National Taiwan University from Taiwan explained the application of AI for environmental protection in tourism development and Dr. Ariya Svetamra at the Department of Women’s Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, Chiang Mai University demonstrated the use of FPAR(Feminist Participatory Action Research) to cope with the issue of violence toward female migrant workers. This session was consisted of two parts, lectures, and discussions. In the latter part, participants expressed their opinions for these lectures and shared their own experiences. Both speakers and participants are from outside Japan and attended the session virtually. The session was facilitated by the Chairperson of this RG, Dr. Naoko Shinkai at the Department of Policy Studies, Tsuda University and the Vice-Chair, Dr. Pei-Hsin Hsu at Taiwan Forestry Research Institute.

After this, we had a small seminar with Dr. Chen to follow up some details on his project in July.

We also hosted a webinar, a research seminar on Business Innovation During the Crises: no trade-off between human rights and business performance in September, 2022. This seminar was co-organized with the Research Institute for Policy Studies, Tsuda University (TU-RIPS). We invited two guest speakers from Sri Lanka, Dr. Rukmal Weerasinghe, Professor, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, and the Chairperson of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and Dr. Shirantha Heenkenda, Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. The Chairperson of this RG and the Director of TU-RIPS, Dr. Naoko Shinkai, made opening remarks and served as a facilitator

The details can be found from the websites below:

The report of this seminar:

In 2023, we plan to have seminars and a session about innovation and development at the JASID conference. Since most of the RG’s members reside overseas, we will continue our activities virtually.

We appreciate your support and look forward to your participation.

Activity Report of the Research Group: ”Innovation and Development for Solving Social Problems”

Activity Report in the FY 2022

(Oct. 2021-Sept. 2022)

IDSSP (Innovation and Development for Solving Social Problems) was launched in January 2022 after its establishment was approved in the 32nd Annual Conference of JASID in Nov. 2021. This research group was created to provide a platform for researchers in the field of international development to exchange ideas and share knowledge on the process of solving social issues, which are commonly observed in the World, and conduct inter-disciplinary research on applicable innovations. Since half of our members reside outside of Japan, all activities have been conducted online.

In Jan., 2022, a kick-off meeting was held and members were introduced. We also planned our activities for the financial year 2021-2022.

Between Feb. and April, 2022, we prepared for a round table session in the 23rd Spring Conference of JASID. We chose guest speakers and topics, and communicated with guest speakers to organize our session.

In June 2022, a roundtable session, titled “Prospects in Innovation and Development for Solving Social Problems: Learning from Cases in Asia“, was held during the 23rd Spring Conference of JASID. In this roundtable session, we discussed commonality and differences of social issues in Asia and the use of multifaceted approaches in problem-solving. We invited two guest speakers, Dr. Vincent Y-W Chen at the Department of Leisure Management, Minghsin University of Science and Technology and Technology & Institute of Fisheries Science, National Taiwan University, Taiwan, and Dr. Ariya Svetamra, Department of Women’s Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, Chiang Mai University, Thailand.

Dr. Chen presented on “The Application of AI Technology to Address SDG issues” and demonstrated the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to protect green sea turtles in Xiao Liuqiu island, Taiwan, and how to develop sustainable tourism and communities for nature conservation.

Dr. Svetamra presented on “Gendered Dynamics of Women Migrant Workers in Northern Thailand”, described the severe conditions, which migrant women in Northern Thailand had to face in their lives, and explained the application of FPAR (Feminist Participatory Action Research) to create their opportunities in the future. In the discussion session following two talks, participants shared the issues and knowledge in tourism development and international migration.

The vice representative, Dr. Pei-Hsin Hsu, and the representative, Dr. Naoko Shinkai, co-chaired this roundtable session.

In July 2022, we had a research meeting with Dr. Chen to follow up on the issue of innovation and development from AI prospects.

In September 2022, a joint seminar, 2022 IDSSP-JASID research seminar/The 5th TU-RIPS seminar on “Business Innovation During the Crises: no trade-off between human rights and business performance “was held.

This seminar was co-organized by IDSSP and the Research Institute for Policy Studies, Tsuda University. In this seminar, two professors from Sri Lanka, Dr. Rukmal Weerasinghe, Professor, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce and the Chairperson, Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka, and Dr. Shirantha Heenkenda, Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka made presentations.

Dr. Weerasinghe provided a talk on the innovative business operations in Sri Lanka in a state of multiple crises, economic and financial crises, and pandemic, and illustrated how the right of employees was preserved.

Following the talk by Dr. Weerashinghe, Dr. Heenkenda made a speech and added the legal background of human rights in business in Sri Lanka and called attention to possible human rights risks during the crises. In the discussion session after two talks, we reviewed essential factors in leading and developing business in difficult times without sacrificing human rights.

In addition, we had a preparatory meeting with guest speakers and core members before each event and two supplemental research meetings with core members.

Q: I am a member of JASID. However, I was told “You are not a member of JASID” when I submitted a paper or applied for the conference

Answer

Q:I have not received any e-mails from JASID

The following are some common cases in which you do not receive e-mails from JASID.

If you do not receive an e-mail from us, please check if any of the following cases applies to you. If you still do not receive an e-mail, please contact the Secretariat using the “Contact Us” form.

1. Our membership system has stopped delivering e-mails to you due to repeated delivery errors

Our membership system is designed to automatically stop delivery to e-mail addresses that have failed to send e-mails several times.

If you have not changed your e-mail address but have stopped receiving e-mails from JASID, it is possible that the system has stopped delivery because your organization’s server was temporarily unavailable for maintenance, etc.

In this case, please fill out the “Regain contact with JASID” form to request resumption of e-mail delivery.

Regain contact with JASID

Please note that e-mails sent from the JASID membership system contain important information, so we ask that all current JASID members receive our e-mails.

2. E-mail from JASID is blocked

In principle, information from JASID is sent from e-mail addresses in the domain or the domain (membership system). Please set your e-mail address to receive e-mails from these two domains.

If you are using an e-mail account managed by your institution, please ask your institution’s system administrator if e-mail from the above two domains is blocked.

If your institution’s security prevents you from receiving JASID e-mails, please register your personal e-mail address as the address for login to your “My Page”.

3. You are not using the e-mail address registered with JASID

We have seen many cases where members have stopped using the e-mail address registered with JASID. However, they thought they no longer received JASID e-mails.

When you no longer use the e-mail address you have been using for JASID, please change the e-mail address on your “My Page”. If you have already lost access to your “My Page”, please contact the JASID Secretariat.

4. E-mails from JASID arrive in my spam or promotions folder

We sometimes send important notices via our membership system, so please make sure that e-mails from the above domains are set to arrive in your Inbox.

Regarding “I have sent an e-mail to JASID but have not received a reply from JASID”…

If you have replied to an e-mail sent from our membership system, the e-mail will not be sent to the JASID Secretariat (because it is a delivery-only e-mail). If you wish to contact us, please use the Contact Form or send e-mail.

As a rule, the secretariat office is open on Tuesdays and Fridays. Please understand that it may take some time for us to reply.

If you still have not received an e-mail after checking any of the above, please contact the Secretariat. Thank you very much for your cooperation in ensuring the smooth operation of JASID.

Q: I am on a leave of absence from university. Can I still enroll in JASID as a student member?

A: Every August, we ask student members to submit their student ID card to prove that they are students. At this time, they can continue their student membership if they submit a copy of a document that proves that they are on a leave of absence (e.g., a certificate of absence from school).

Please note that you must remember to renew your membership every year until you return to school. If not submitted, you will become a regular member from the following year. In addition, from the FY2023 (October 2022), we have established a self-suspension system, so you may use it.

For working students, we ask that you join as a full member. If you have any questions, please contact the JASID Secretariat.

Q: Cautions for payment of dues via bank check

Two methods of payment are available on “My Page”: credit card payment and online banking payment by bank check.

However, bank checks are only available in Japan and cannot accept money transfers from overseas.

For this reason, if you have selected bank check as your payment method when creating your invoice, please send money from overseas to JASID’s Japan Post Bank account, not to the bank check account number.

Please refer to the following page for instructions on how to send money to the Japan Post Bank account.

Activity Report of the Research Group: ”Innovation and Development for Solving Social Problems”

Research Group: ”Innovation and Development for Solving Social Problems”

This research group (RG) was proposed last year to aim for discussing innovative approaches to tackle social problems, which are common in the world and need attention.

The research topic also reflects on the theme of the 31st JASID Annual Conference, organized by Tsuda University, which commemorated its 120th anniversary in 2020; “Time for Change: Innovation for Inclusive Society”.

Members consist of the Executive Chair, Professor Izumi Ohno and some Conference Executive Committee members of the 31st JASID Annual Conference, alumni of GSID, Nagoya University, and colleagues at JASID etc. The representative of this RG is Dr. Naoko Shinkai, Tsuda University and the Vice Representative is Dr. Pei-Hsin Hsu, Taiwan Forestry Research Institute.

This RG was approved at the 32nd JASID Annual Conference, held in Nov. 2021. We had the first virtual member meeting in Jan. 2022. We talked about our research topic and exchanged views on related issues.

We plan to invite some guest speakers and hold virtual seminars. We are also planning a session at the JASID conference. Since most of the RG’s members reside overseas, the RG’s activities will be conducted virtually.

We appreciate your support and look forward to your participation.

Representative: Naoko Shinkai, Tsuda University

For more information, see the following page.

Q: I want to submit my paper. Should I be a JASID member when I submit my paper?

A: Yes, only JASID members are eligible to contribute to ” the Journal of International Development Studies”. Our submission rules are available to only members, so please refer to the News section of your “My Page”.

Q: Can a non-member make presentation at the conference?

A: No. Only JASID members can make a presentation. However, non-members can report in the planning session and round table session, but only JASID members can submit the proposal of the planning or round table session. If you wish to make an oral presentation or a poster presentation in the conference, please submit your application by the end of July for the annual conference, or by the end of February for the spring conference.

Q: How long does it take to be approved after applying for membership?
