Peers and peer cultures of groups that we’re part of affect who we are and who we become. In the social sciences, a great deal of emphasis is placed on the effect of parents. I argue this is misplaced, and that to understand why children, teens, and adults act the way they do, and turn out the way they, we should look at the effects of peers and peer culture.
In the talk I will give, I will examine peer effects through the examples of Stuyvesant High School, an elite public high school in New York City, diversity programs and organizational culture, violence among police in the United States, and the adult children of immigrants in the United States (by Syed Ali).
講師：Syed Ali
ロングアイランド大学ブルックリン校教授、立教大学2025年度招へい研究員、科学研究費補助金：国際共同研究加速基金（国際共同研究強化（B））海外共同研究者。
移民研究、エスニシティ、社会科学理論を専門とする社会学者。
イギリスに生まれ、インド出身の両親と共に３歳でアメリカに移住する。幼少期からニューヨーク市で育ち、現在もニューヨーク市で研究を継続している。これまで、２回のフルブライト奨学金を通して、インドとドバイで長期間に及んで研究・調査を実施した。その成果を著したSyed Ali（2010）Dubai：Gilded Cage, Yale University Press: New Haven and London. は、カファラ（スポンサーシップ）制度によって移民労働者の基本的な人権が侵害されている実態を世界的に知らせる著書となり、米国、英国、オランダ、フランス、スペイン、インドでも高く評価されている。ま た、Syed Ali, and Margaret M. Chin（2023） The Peer Effect: How Your Peers Shape Who You Are and Who You Will Become. New York University Press: New York. では、「仲間や仲間文化の影響」に着目して、移民第二世代、スタイヴェサント高校生や卒業生、多様性プログラムと企業、米国の警察官の暴力に及ぼす影響について分析している。
