Background

Since the collapse of the Cold War structure in the 1990s, conflicts of increasing complexity have emerged in different parts of the world.

Conflicts and divisions have deepened at various levels, including conflicts between democracies and despotism, struggles over the distribution of wealth in the global economy, the existence of people marginalized on the basis of ethnicity and religion, and the ways in which societies are directly affected by environmental changes such as climate change.

The world today is in an unsustainable situation. Under these circumstances, the Sustainable Development Goals, which are to be achieved by 2030, are beginning to seem distant. In the field of education, while it is hoped that the achievement of the SDG 4 education development targets will lead to the realization of more sustainable development, it has been pointed out in recent years that the SDG 4 targets are, as always, targets based on the “modernization paradigm” and that it is difficult to make the fundamental shift to a new education paradigm that will be required in the post-2030 era.

It has been pointed out that it is difficult to make the fundamental shift to a new education paradigm required in the post-2030 era. It is also emphasized that the “true transformation” of education in the post-2030 era is possible by exploring various evidence-based alternatives to build evidence for the possibility of such a transformation.

Purpose

In the face of various global challenges in the post-2030 era, we need to collectively rethink education and sustainability in the Asian region. More importantly, we need to rethink how to nurture human resources to further promote transformation for sustainable and resilient global development in the post-2030 era.

The main objective of this symposium is to focus on the efforts paid by higher education institutions for building international education development studies in East Asia, including Japan, South Korea, and China, to explore the status, characteristics, approaches, achievements, and challenges in the process of building international education development studies in East Asia.

Moreover, it is to bring researchers, educators and higher education stakeholders what are the necessary transformations in teaching and learning of International Educational Development Studies within higher education institutions to collectively achieve peace, sustainability and resilience in the post-2030.
