Online talk on the state of Bangladesh’s economy by the Chair of the White Paper Committee

Since the student-led mass protest movement ousted the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024, Bangladesh’s interim government led by Prof. Mohammad Yunus has undertaken a number of reform initiatives. Important among them was the formation of a 12-member committee to prepare a white paper on the state of the economy they inherited from Sheikh Hasina’s government.

The committee was led by Debapriya Bhattacharya, a Distinguished Fellow at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD). The white paper was submitted to Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus in December 2024, triggering debates over what actions should be taken by the interim government while it prepares for the national election that is likely to take place by the end of 2025.

In his talk, Dr Bhattacharya will discuss what is in the white paper and what reforms are needed to recoup Bangladesh’s economy. He will also invite participants to discuss with him what implications the donor community can draw from the crisis of governance Bangladesh fell into under Sheikh Hasina’s regime, and how Japan can contribute to rebuilding democratic Bangladesh.
